I always liked ancient films about Rome starting from Ben Hur up to Gladiator. I can’t count how often I watched these films. Now I had the possibility to stay in Rome for four days, not only to visit the breathtaking monuments like the Colosseum but also to observe the people on the street.
During these days I was almost always on the street finding funny situations or extraordinary and unique persons. Of course, it is a matter of style but in this case, I did not talk to the people before I took their picture in order not to destroy or to disturb the situation.
In hotspots like Rome you find many many tourists and from my point of view every tourist has at least one cell phone with a selfie stick. It seems to me that the attraction is no longer the place of interest but the person with the stick. I am sure you could fill many books with people and their selfie sticks, it is very funny when you see them posing. Some act like a model, some like a fish, some look serious, some don’t.
But you are also confronted with the danger of terrorist attacks at these places and the people are now used to seeing heavily armed soldiers. You find smiling people with the stick even when just two meters away there are soldiers with a lot of guns to protect them in a case of emergency.
If you love street photography, Rome is a perfect place. There are so many people with cameras, nobody (almost nobody) will care about you taking shots.
