Featured Street Photographer of the Week: Sergi Escribano

What drew you to street photography initially?

I was born in the old town of Barcelona and since I was a child I have felt a great fascination for the light…she caught me!

How would you describe your street photography style?

I do not believe much in styles, perhaps in the particular vision of each photographer regarding how the world sees. My current vision is rather dark, perhaps because I become older or perhaps because humans have definitely become crazy.

Can you tell us a little about how you got it? (On a side note, I think the guy looking up makes the whole image. Love it!)

I was lucky, honestly.Photography is fed by many factors and one of them is luck

You are great at using light and shadows to get dramatic, mysterious shots – how do you do that? How do you get the right lighting conditions for each shot?

First, thank you for your compliment. As I mentioned before, given its special light, Barcelona is the perfect city to practice street photography. Capturing this light, however, requires meticulous planning, as the city’s light does not always behave the same way in winter as in summer (this may seem obvious, but sometimes in the search for our art, we photographers can forget the basics!)

Where is your favorite place to shoot?

Anywhere, while you have light … and shadows!

Do you think street photography is important? Explain.

I think photography can help change or at least let us understand the world we live in but, no, I don’t think so. Photography is a powerful tool to show what is happening around us…I love photography – but there are much more important things in my life. Thank you and be happy friends.
