Welcome to How to Self-Publish Your Photo Book
First of all, welcome. We’re genuinely glad you’re here.
If you’ve ever dreamed of creating a photo book but felt overwhelmed by the process, unsure where to start, or worried you’d somehow “do it wrong,” you’re in the right place.
The truth? Most photographers don’t learn how to make a book because no one really teaches it, at least not in a concise, start-to-finish manner.
When we created Where the Streets Lead, we were figuring it out as we went. We had a vision, a stack of photographs, and a lot of questions. How do you sequence images? What size should the book be? How do you actually prepare files for print? What happens after it’s finished?
We learned through trial and error, a few mistakes, and a whole lot of persistence. This course is the guide we wish we’d had.
What You’ll Learn
The lessons in this course will walk you step-by-step through the process of turning an idea into a finished, print-ready photo book. Together, we’ll cover how to:
- Clarify the purpose and concept behind your book
- Select and sequence images to create a meaningful flow and story
- Design layouts that support your work without overpowering it
- Build and export a professional, print-ready PDF
- Navigate printing decisions and production options with confidence
- Market and sell your book so it actually reaches people
Built by Photographers, for Photographers
This course isn’t coming from a big publishing house or design school. It’s built by photographers who learned by doing.
We’ll share what worked, what didn’t, and the lessons we wish someone had told us earlier. The goal is to help you move through the process with more confidence and a lot less guesswork. Because we’ll be using our own book as a real-world example throughout this course, we want you to have a copy to follow along with as we discuss different concepts, decisions, and lessons learned. You can see a digital copy here.
You Can Do This Yourself (Really)
We’re living in an incredible DIY era for photographers. Today, tools that once belonged exclusively to publishers, designers, and production teams are more accessible than ever. Creating your own photo book no longer requires industry connections or a huge budget to get started.
That doesn’t mean professional help isn’t valuable. Far from it. Great editors, designers, printers, and publishers can elevate a project in meaningful ways, and in some cases, bringing in extra expertise is absolutely the right move. But here’s the thing: creating a photo book is no longer something reserved for “real publishers” or institutions. It’s something you can do.
This course is designed to help you confidently move through the process on your own while also helping you recognize when outside support might strengthen your project. Sometimes DIY is enough. Sometimes collaboration makes sense. We’ll help you understand the difference.
Remember: The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is getting your work into the world in a thoughtful, meaningful way.
Don’t Skip the Workbook
Alongside the lessons, you’ll find a guided workbook designed to help you think through decisions, organize ideas, and make steady progress as you go. Download it to your trusty digital notebook, or go old school and print it out, pop it in a binder, and grab your favorite pen. We recommend physically printing the workbook. The power of having a scratch pad handy during creative endeavors is not to be understimated. Plus, it’s a great way to keep all your notes and observations around this process organized.
One last thing before you dive in…
And finally, if at any point you start feeling overwhelmed by your project, keep this in mind: You don’t need to have everything figured out today. You don’t need the perfect concept, the perfect edit, or a perfectly sequenced body of work. You just need a starting point.
By the end of this course, you’ll have more than just ideas, you’ll have a clear roadmap and the tools to confidently move your photo book from concept to print.
And remember, you don’t have to do this alone. If you have a question, get stuck, or simply want to share your progress or celebrate a milestone, I’d love to hear from you. Now, let’s get started. Your book is waiting.
