This month, it was an honor to speak with Gulnara Samoilova, a fine art, documentary and street photographer who was born in Russia and later moved to New York City in 1992. Before moving to the U.S., Gulnara was actually the only female fine art photographer in the Autonomous Republic of Bashkortostan, where she was born. As you can imagine, Gulnara has had some extraordinary experiences as a photographer, including being on site as the World Trade Centers fell on 9/11. We spoke about that
End of the Line
I believe documentary photography is a subjective depiction of the photographer’s world and that’s how I approach my subjects. I use the medium to explore the world around me, placing myself in situations that I may not have without my camera. It’s a very voyeuristic approach. I was going out every day to shoot, posting photos to social media networks, watching documentaries, looking at web pages and blogs, going to expos, reading books, EVERYTHING. Later, that initial intensity waned, but street photography is still my favorite
