Members of some religious orders in Europe continue to wear traditional garb. Although I frequently encountered members of different religious orders in Paris, I had not been able to photograph them. As I flànered home after a long day making pictures, a group of nuns crossed Quai Montebello on their way to Cathedral Notre Dame. I realized that including the Cathedral would make a stronger image. So I stopped to let them pass and made this image that captures the traditional habit and the backpack that some of them were wearing

I was in London (Jan 2024) andI was drawn to this illuminated passageway from across the street. (It was night.) I looked in and saw the man standing stone still. I composed a few images, taking my time, and still he didn’t move. Then I realized he was holding a camera at his waist and was playing with the light and the reflections above and making his own images. I quietly approached, excused myself and simply showed him the image (rendered in B&W) from the back of my camera. He smiled broadly, and told me in liked it. He lifted his camera to show me that he too was working at image making. I complimented him and then we both quietly returned to our effort. I went on my way into the night and he returned to his reflection.
