The People Behind the Mask by Alec Rill
Everybody who has been to Times Square has seen the cartoon characters offering to take pictures with tourists for money. Also, many people have tried to take pictures of them without paying and have seen the characters react negatively, even pushing tourists away if they don’t want to pay. These scenes are a permanent staple in Times Square, just as the singing cowboy seems to always be there. I often think about who the cartoon characters are – behind the masks and the costumes. Surely they are human beings with a story, a past and especially a struggling present: It can’t be easy to make a living, especially when it’s 90 degrees outside under a heavy suit. Who are they? This photo captured one of them as them as she walked around Times Square to catch a bit of shade or maybe to get away from tourists snaping pictures and touching her. They are human beings, after all. She is looking at me, her face telling me different stories, she wants to know why I am taking her picture but maybe she is also telling me “I’m here, I am human, I also need a break.” Street photography is about telling stories and uncovering different stories within a face, a decisive moment.
