maria-rocco-Maria2-500This month, many members of the street photography community, those of us here at SPM included, are mourning the loss of a remarkable street photographer, Maria Roco. Not only was Maria an incredibly talented photographer, she was a highly successful physicist, an avid world traveler and had a black belt in taekwondo. More importantly, Maria was dearly loved by all of her friends and family.

Maria was confident, independent, highly intelligent and talented, but those qualities never overshadowed her soft-spoken manner, thoughtfulness, gentle spirit and humble nature. Perhaps those qualities are what drew people most to Maria and her work.

Maria described herself on her Google+ account, where she had about 30,000 followers, as someone “passionate about traveling and photography” who enjoyed capturing shots of nature, life and people. Her loss came much too soon and we are left with an impressive body of touching street shots that give us a small glimpse into how Maria saw the world.

Although Maria’s loss leaves us deeply saddened, her adventurous spirit, passion for learning new things and genuine love for life will live on through her friends, family and photographs, inspiring others to live life to the fullest each and every day.
