Interview with Zahid Rahman

“There is a story behind every moment. I believe that.” – Zahid

This month’s featured photographer is one we have wanted to talk to for quite a long time. Zahid’s images often appear in our “Street Shooters” section. He is a great storyteller. Zahid is always curious and says that the stories draw him in. To get to know a person’s story, he uses the third eye – the eye of the mind, (don’t worry fellow Westerners, Zahid explains what this means in more detail during the interview).

You’ll learn about the Hindu Goddess Durga as well, a goddess who has 10 hands with a different weapon in each hand. Zahid talks about how people are like Durga in a way, with several different facets, many of which are more than skin deep. He also explains how photographers can apply the principles of the third eye to their street photography to capture powerful stories and symbolism in their images.

Zahid Rahman

I was born in 1978 in a small coastal town of Bagerhat, Bangladesh. While in school I became involved myself in creative and social activities like acting, scouting etc. in college I joined an amateur theater. After college I attended Aligarh University in India to study Linguistics and returned to Bangladesh after graduation in 1999. This time I moved to the capital of Bangladesh (DHAKA) and joined one Garments manufacturer company. As I was a Logistics professional, I had many opportunities to meet and observe people the within company and the community. in 2010 I bought a camera and began photographing everything around me. Finally I began doing street and fine art photography. I believe that photography is the 3rd eye view of a photographer and the most important thing is to know how to see with that 3rd eye. No course can teach you this, its you who can teach yourself to use the 3rd eye.

Capturing the Moment

Let's talk about capturing the moment - the experience of photography in itself - something that Matt Brass argues is less about imagery and more about immersing one’s self into a place or an event.

Synergy

A series of photographs that extracts fragments from everyday banal life and utilizes photography’s power to create an alternative meaning.
