Interview with Sofía Sebastián

Sofía Sebastián began to focus on photography in 2011, but it wasn’t until recently that she discovered her passion for street and documentary photography specifically – and we’re so glad she did. Sofía’s work is compelling, always featuring interesting light, fascinating characters, or surprising stories.

Eventually though, the people who routinely filled Sofía’s frames slowly disappeared from the streets when the pandemic began and then slowly dragged on. Sofía talked to us about finding new creative outlets for her photography during this challenging time – an approach that led her closer to home and resulted in a beautiful project.

In addition to “pandemic street photography,” we talked about Sofía’s fascinating background – one that had her taking a closer look at people and human behavior from her university days on, and her love for classic films, which began in her teen years, and how that love influences her photography even today.

Sophia Sebastian

Sofía Sebastián was born in Madrid but she currently lives in Washington DC. She was first introduced to photography while watching classic movies as a teenager. She didn't know at the time but the powerful visual storytelling of movie masters such as F.W. Murnau, Francois Truffaut, and Luis Buñuel became forever embedded in her brain. Starting in 2011 she began to focus in photography, taking courses through the International Center for Photography in NYC, but it was only recently that she discovered her passion for street and documentary photography.
