Street Shooters of March 2022

Interview with Julia Coddington

This month, the women of street photography are back for our featured photographer section, this time with a street photographer we greatly admire: Julia Coddington. Julia is extremely active in the realm of street photography. She’s a member of more than one collective, curates several Instagram accounts (that you really must check out), is an admin for Women in Street, teaches workshops, and is simply a fantastic street photographer.

Inspired by her own life experiences, Julia’s work is often bright, colorful, and vibrant. But it’s varied too. Sometimes Julia images are all about shapes and colors cutting across the background of a clean blue sky and other times they are replete with faces, people, and emotions. In any case, it quickly becomes clear that Julia loves to fill her frame with multiple subjects, which makes for images that grab your attention and hold it there for their many details and nuances.

Julia is from Australia but she loves to travel. Her images often reflect that love, but when she’s at home, as most of us have been for the past couple of years, she can often be found hanging around “the pool,” which turns out to be so much more than a regular old American pool and a ripe hunting ground for street photographers if you know how to go about taking your shots. We talked about Julia’s favorite places to shoot and her methods and so much more. Let’s just say, you’re going to love getting to know Julia, seeing her talk about her work, and learning from this skilled photographer and teacher.

Julia Coddington

Street photography for me is like an addiction. And with any addiction there are highs and lows. It is also about inserting yourself into a situation and becoming invisible. Observing people, their interactions, shapes, movement, colours, light and shadows. It’s about ‘seeing’ these things and capturing them. What I love most is to lose myself in my invisibility and meld into the scene. It’s almost a fugue-like state, like I’m not there, or like a fly on the wall, or wearing an invisibility cloak. And this state is what fuels the addiction.
