Interview with Colin Johnson

It wasn’t long ago that Colin Johnson was lying in a hospital bed unsure as to whether he would get to continue life with his family. Fortunately, he recovered. His experience left him filled with a new sense of purpose – a sense of purpose that is palpable in his work.

Colin spoke with us about more than just his life-changing experience. He discussed why street photography is important to him and the role faith and trust play in the way he captures his shots. He also talks about the value of trying out new techniques and why traveling solo offers up some pretty unique opportunities for street photographers.

Colin Johnson

My name is Colin Johnson. I am a Scottish born designer, living in San Francisco. I am a blackbelt in traditional Japanese full-contact karate. It helps with situational awareness which is always something a street photographer needs. I am primarily a street photographer but I also travel alone with my cameras to SE Asia on a search for beauty and truth. My travel work keeps with my ethos of street - nothing staged, always candid, always respectful. There are two sides to my work. They are like Yin and Yang. Dark and light. Sometimes they cross over. I was given another chance at life and it made was clear in that instant that this was my path for the remainder. Thank you for taking a look at my work. I hope some of the images stir something in you.
