Harvey Stein on the Streets of New York

People Being People

In Issue 30

Welcome to our second special issue of Street Photography Magazine in the span of just two months! This time we are sharing photos taken by the finalists of the annual Miami Street Photography Festival (MSPF).

MSPF was founded by Juan Jose Reyes. His goal was to create an international platform that would allow people from around the globe to show off their street photography in a place where many art venues meet during Art Basel week in Miami. Finalists from the MSPF competition are selected from the many submissions and their work is then displayed in the HistoryMiami Museum during the festival, which this year runs from December 3-6. In all respects MSPF has been a great success, showing the world that street photography is an important art, one that is on par even with the high quality art that is on display from leading international gallerists and collectors for Art Basel week.

In addition to viewing the MSPF the photo gallery at HistoryMiami Museum, during the festival you can also get your hands on Leica cameras, have your portfolio reviewed by professional street photographers and listen to master talks by Harvey Stein, Peter Turnley and David Alan Harvey as well as a MSPF talk by Maggie Steber. This year the festival also included a Leica photowalk/instameet, an MSPF panel discussion and the MSPF 2015 awards bash. If you weren’t able to make any of these events this year, be sure to stay tuned for next year’s MSPF schedule of events so you can make plans to attend.

While our magazine normally includes much more written content, such as photo essays, gear reviews, how-to articles and photographer interviews, we thought that just sharing the images from the MSPF finalists, with no additional comments, would be a great way for our readers to get to know some street photographers they may not have heard of before and find some inspiration from their unique perspectives and spectacular images.

We’ve also included an exclusive audio interview with one of the festival’s judges, Harvey Stein. Harvey and Bob chatted about the decades he’s spent photographing the streets of New York, his latest street photography book, and everything else he has going on this year.

Enjoy this special issue of SPM and as always, happy shooting!

P.S. In this issue, we’ve divided the finalists’ images into five separate groups or categories. These groups were not determined by the MSPF nor by the artists, but rather by the editors here at SPM (per our own “artistic vision”) in an attempt to present this issue to our readers in an organized fashion.
