Welcome readers, to issue 29 of Street Photography Magazine. This month we have an interesting line up of photo stories and projects as well as a fascinating interview with our featured photographer of the month.
First up, the interview. This month, we spoke with Michael Hyatt, a highly talented photographer who has documented street life for decades, in many different countries and settings. He has documented times of peace and times of political unrest and as he does he shares something of himself. Listen in on our audio interview with Michael to get to know him and his art a little better. We’re sure you’ll enjoy the powerful images he’s contributed to this issue as well.
Next, we have a stunning photo project from Laurent Bertrais called “A Walk Through the WWII Saint-Nazaire Building”. Laurent captures light dancing across austere walls marked with traces of war as pieces of history meld together with modern life in a way that is nothing less than artful. Don’t miss it.
Kannan Muthuraman tells a somber story in his article, “Weavers of Thirumazhisai”. Kannan takes us inside the workhouses of the weavers, workhouses that often double as their homes. The weavers are talented at their craft, yet they are forced to endure inhumane work hours and unjustly low pay rates. Despite the sad story behind this project, Kannan has managed to capture the weavers and their work in a beautiful, dignified way.
In the article, “A Land Called Bolivia”, Ashley Hunsberger takes us to a less touristic country where things modern and ancient combine to create a strange and intriguing place that seems somehow unaffected by the outside world – a rarity in a time of unprecedented globalization. For a country that is relatively small, the variety in landscapes, peoples, and cultures is surprising and creates what some might call a street photographer’s paradise.
Finally, we have some excellent work to share with you from a few of our top contributors in our monthly feature, “Street Shooters of the Month”. We hope you enjoy their work as much as we did. If you have a standout street shot you’d like to see published in this feature, create a profile on the SPM website and submit it for our review. We love seeing work from fellow street photographers from around the world.
Happy shooting everyone!
