February 27th at Oxford Circus

Matt Jerrams

Oxford Circus is one on London’s busiest tube stations, with almost 85 million journeys starting and finishing there each year. I have no idea why I started this project to shoot the same place on the same day…it’s just part of my regular commute. I do like this angle of the station exit though, as it captures an interesting backdrop of London’s main retail street, and the people that work there.

Back in 2018, London was gifted a rare opportunity for snow and bitter temperatures with the now famous ‘Beast From The East’ storm, which made for an unusual photograph.

The following year was the complete opposite – a February heatwave – with temperatures in the 60’s. The following year things returned to normal, with the usual late winter rainfall, and then this year -the most unusual sight of all- an empty London in full lockdown due to Covid 19.

A camera nut all my life (I actually worked in photo retail for 15 years from the age of 14!) I only began using digital cameras in 2011 when I purchased a Fujifilm X10. I am now fully integrated into the Fujifilm eco system, and love their gear. I have long been a fan of street photography, but have struggled with it up until the start of 2015, when for some reason I discovered there was really nothing to be afraid of. I now work in film production, and stills photography has become my one passion in life. Thankfully, I live very close to London (where I work too) and can often be found pounding the streets in London's many great boroughs.
