A Night at Sixth Street in Austin, Texas

Koushik Upadhyayula

Do you know about Austin Sixth Street?

Have you ever heard of what’s happening on the famous Austin Sixth Street? If not, do not worry. My photographs will take you on a tour.

Before I tell you more about Austin Sixth Street and my photographs, I would like to share my experience on the street photography and what led me get into it. I started learning photography in 2012 and during my initial stage of learning, I used to take pictures of landscape, people and wildlife. Most of all, I always felt happy when taking pictures of people as I am not just taking their photographs but giving memories for them to cherish forever. I moved from San Jose, CA to Austin, TX in 2013 and had been to Austin Sixth Street a few times. On September 13, 2015, when I planned to visit Austin downtown, I thought of carrying my camera to capture some pictures that show the beauty of life, passion, interest, entertainment, hard work and I was able to capture what I wanted. By the way, this is the first time, I have done street photography and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a challenging task as it requires the right timing and framing of the photographs and bring a story or a theme to them.

Camera gear used- I used Nikon D5100, 50 mm/ F 1.5 prime lens to take these night street photographs (No external flash used) and used Picasa to edit the pictures for black and white conversion and slight color enhancement.

About Austin Sixth Street

“Sixth Street (formerly known as Pecan Street) is lined with many historical houses and commercial buildings dating from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The storied old buildings now have numerous bars, a host of live entertainment venues, tattoo parlors, art galleries, casual cafes, upscale restaurants, and the elegant Driskill Hotel.

Live music of every genre abounds. From jazz, blues, and country to rock, hip-hop, beat, progressive, metal, punk and derivations of these, there’s something to whet everyone’s musical pallet. Great food is a staple on Sixth Street, featuring such regional staples as chili, ribs, and Tex-Mex plus steak, seafood, cajun-cooking, and
deli.”

Let’s Take a Tour of Austin Sixth Street

I did get a chance to capture some pictures that show a group of musicians who‘re enjoying playing the music, a street entertainer who poses as a statue in realistic makeup and costume typically remaining immobile for very long periods of time, a man focused on his art work, a man waiting for his customers to provide Austin’s “Best wurst” food, a girl dancing to the music and entertaining people, a lady sitting in a horse carriage and waiting to pick up her customers, an acrobat doing feats for his living, etc.

Horse Carriage Ride

“Take a horse carriage ride and feel to be on top of the world. Be it the beginning or end of a romantic dinner, a family outing, or a ride-off into the sunset for a newlywed couple, horse carriage ride provides you the best and unique experience.”

More details on the reservations can be found at https://carriagebooking.com/austin/

Best Wurst Food

Before you draw conclusion about the name Best Wurst food, let me tell you something about it. You cannot leave Austin Sixth Street without having Austin’s best grilled sausage sandwiches. This street food will leave your mouth watering with its delicious menu.

Fact: The Best Wurst has been voted “Hands down, the best street food in Austin” by the Austin Chronicle and recognized by the Food Networks notables like Guy Fieri and Rachel Ray.

The Best Wurst have been featured on the Tonight Show, MTV and National Public Radio, and are highlighted in critic Heather Shouse’s national released book, Food Trucks
